Measuring (and Maintaining) Our Success

How will we know when we’ve achieved the goals of the Administrative Transformation Program? How will we sustain them? Benefits realization, or the Benefits Realization Management (BRM) framework, is a structured way to measure the value of ATP’s work at all areas of the University of Wisconsin. BRM gives us a clear definition of what success looks like and how we can achieve and sustain it.

ATP is committed to enhancing and modernizing administrative operations for all of UW — and remaining transparent throughout the process. ATP’s BRM framework provides you with metrics to ensure our work stays on track. 

What is Benefits Realization?

Benefits realization focuses on specific, realistic, and time-bounded gains that result in positive outcomes for staff, while also aligning with the UW’s organizational objectives.

Why Benefits Realization?

When benefits are managed well, organizations receive the greatest possible return on their investments. Now more than ever, we must guarantee that investments in the UW’s portfolios, programs, and projects lead to clear, sustainable benefits. 

But it’s not enough to understand what we want to achieve — it’s equally important for us to know how to achieve it. The BRM framework ensures that ATP and its projects align with the UW’s strategic mission to deliver benefits to all University of Wisconsin institutions. 

The BRM Framework

The Benefits Realization Management framework includes four stages:

  • Understand: Outline the objectives and goals of the BRM framework to ensure alignment with program strategy.
  • Identify: Define, organize, and capture benefit attributes to help identify what benefits to pursue during the program life cycle.
  • Execute: Create or modify the products, services, and processes that will yield the identified benefits.
  • Sustain: Focus on the acceptance of project outcomes leading to the realization of established benefits.

This structure will allow the program to initially focus on identifying benefits for the various projects, while also providing a path to sustain each benefit long-term.
